ABOUT US
About the Media, Communication and Postal Employees Union
Haber-Sen (Media, Communication and Postal Employees Union) is the strongest and most effective trade union in the branches of media and communication services. Our members work in the following institutions; TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation), PTT (Post, Telegraph and Telephone), General Directorate of Press and Communication, RTÜK (Television and Radio Supreme Council) and Telecommunication agency. Haber-Sen has branches and representatives in 67 cities in all over the Turkey that has 81 cities in total.
Haber-Sen carries out its struggle of trade union of public employees, which has started towards the end of 1980, on the basis of tradition that comes from Tüm Haber-Sen. Before Tüm Haber-Sen was established, there was no so much tradition of association in our branches of industry. Association activities have started with associations in fields, where there was no trade unionism. Especially ÇAYAT, which was established by PTT workers, had a great role in trade unionism. First steps of Tüm Haber-Sen were taken in this association and actions in the spring in 1989. Tüm Haber-Sen was established as the first trade union of our branch of industries on 16 January 1992. Then a de facto and legitimate struggle was started with a slogan “Rights are not given but taken; we will rule as we produce”. Tüm Haber-Sen, with its 40.000 members and 55 branches, became one of the milestones, in trade union struggle in a short period.
This association power frightened some political groups. As a result, Tüm Haber-Sen was closed down with those, who feared from associated power of workers, on 25 May 1995. However, the decision of closure encouraged rather than discouraged our decisiveness and resist. We have established Haber-Sen, with this decisiveness in our trade union movement, on 16 January 1996.
European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in its judgement, dated 21 February 2006, stated that closure of Tüm Haber-Sen was against the law, subsequently; Turkey was sentenced. Rightfulness and legitimacy of the struggle by particularly us and generally by all public employees were proved once again.
Haber-Sen is the representative of this honorary tradition.
Haber-Sen is a trade union to which any worker, in the media and communication branches of industry, can associate. Our trade union struggles for unity of workers without considering their race, political thought, belief and gender. It invites all workers in the media and communication to associate under its organization.
Haber-Sen is the member of the Confederation of Public Employees Trade Unions, KESK, which is the name of hope and struggle of public employees in the trade union movement, and Union Network International (UNI). Our Confederation or KESK with DİSK, TÜRK-İŞ and HAK-İŞ is member of ITUC (International Trade Union of Confederation) and ETUC (European Trade Union Confederation).
Haber-Sen has been struggling for fifteen years despite all anti democratic actions, pressures and illegal approaches.
Haber-Sen is the only democratic trade union, which defends democratic operation, organizational independency and participation of members in decision and activities processes, in our branch of industry.
Haber-Sen, with its activities and struggles for professional and personal benefits, and in legal field, has gained many advantages.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF OUR STRUGGLE
Governments, which were in the political ruling, have changed many times. However understanding and mentality of the government has not changed throughout years. Even the situation has become worse than past as a result of neo-liberal policies. Economic, political and legal bonds with IMF, the World Ban and World Trade Organization have been reinforced. Majority of the society, especially workers, have become poorer and were sentenced to poverty. Anti-democratic actions and human rights violations have continued in the same level. Hundreds of workers were exiled and even killed because of their struggles.
Danger of war still goes on. The political power, which is the most serious obstacle to establishment of peace, continues to resist to any attempt for peace with its repressive and denier mindset. There are still questions related with establishment of internal peace. It is tried to cause armed conflict situation, which has continued for 15 years, once again in the country. Anti-democratic actions, military operations, unknown killings are re-started. Demands for permanent peace are reacted with severe actions.
The Government still does nothing, despite democratic reactions of students, women, young people, workers, villagers and all oppressed groups of the society.
In short, situation and conditions of all workers and the society becomes worse and worse.
Improving social struggle is more important today than the past. Because; working conditions without right to strike, collective bargaining and in anti democratic manner of the Law No. 4688, which has been passed despite our struggle, are subjected to all public employees.
Pro-IMF policies, which have been started to implement at the beginning of 1980s, are tried to put under protection of law and process is tried to be completed.
Our institutions, which have been created with taxes of people and workers, are sold one by one to national and foreign capital under the name of privatization.
Our security for job and future are abolished with applications of contracted personnel that are implemented under the name of Public Administration and Public Personnel Reform.
Gap between workers’ salaries becomes deeper and deeper, loss of reel wage increases.
Our trade union continues to struggle against these problems via increasing its voice and power. We have told it fifteen years ago and still tell that;
A satisfactory salary to workers,
Effective social security, job safety and secure for everyone,
Equal, free, qualified and accessible public services, particularly health and education services, for everyone,
Joint workers law, which is free and has right to strike and collective bargaining, and it should cover public employees, too,
Profession and personal benefits,
Right to participate and conduct political activities freely for everyone,
Abolishing gender discrimination and establishing equality in all parts of life,
Protection of ecological balance and environment,
To establish social peace and democratic Turkey…..
WE HAVE STRUGGLED, WE STRUGGLE AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE,
